A Gift For All Generations: Group Color Analysis for Grandmothers, Mothers, and Daughters

Three Generations, One Color Party

Some of my very favorite sessions happen when a grandmother books a group color analysis for her daughter and granddaughter. Three generations walk into my studio, and within about ten minutes someone is laughing so hard they need a tissue (it's usually Grandma). By the end, everyone is sitting a little taller and saying "look at you!" to each other. There's nothing else quite like it!

If you're a grandmother looking for a meaningful gift this year, or a daughter hoping to plan something special with the women in your family, I'd love to tell you why a color party might be the gift you've been looking for.

A gift that's luxurious and practical

Most of us have a closet full of gifts we were grateful for but seldom used. Some experiences are fun for a day. A group color analysis is fun for a day and useful for a lifetime!

During our session, each person is draped in fabrics to find her own color season, the palette that makes her skin glow, her eyes sparkle, and her whole face come alive. Everyone goes home with her own color card and a large NDU color fan, so she can shop with confidence, pick flattering makeup, and finally know why that one sweater always got compliments. It's pampering and practical in the same afternoon!

Something to do together

We all know how rare it is to get three generations in one room without a holiday meal to cook or a schedule to juggle. A color party gives you a morning set aside just for each other. There are snacks and drinks, a playlist I've curated for the occasion, and a big reveal moment for each person. And let's not forget the makeup lesson! Many clients have said that's their favorite part.

What I love most is watching family members cheer each other on. A granddaughter sees her grandmother in her best blue and says, "Grandma, you look amazing." A mom sees her daughter light up in a color she never would have tried. Those moments are the heart of what I do.

Bring the photo albums

Here's my favorite tip for intergenerational groups: bring a few childhood photos, old family snapshots, or pictures from your favorite eras. Color analysis gets everyone talking about the clothes they loved (and the ones they'd rather forget).

Suddenly Grandma is telling the story of the dress she wore to her first dance, Mom is defending her 1990s scrunchie collection, and everyone is comparing hairstyle eras (the perms deserve their own conversation). Often those photos show that someone was naturally drawn to her best colors all along! It becomes a way of passing down stories, not just style tips, and the laughter that fills the room is just the best.

Why it makes the perfect gift

  • It's an experience, not more stuff. A memory you make together lasts longer than anything in a gift bag.

  • Everyone leaves with something useful. A personal color card and color fan for each guest, plus makeup guidance to match.

  • It works at every age. Teens love learning what makes them feel confident, and women in their 70s often tell me they wish they'd known their colors decades ago (it's never too late!).

  • It's time together. And that's the part everyone remembers.
